We’ve made it through the second week of September. Is it summer? Is it fall? Does it matter?
While driving through downtown yesterday morning, I noticed the strangest thing-no one seemed to know what season they should be dressing for. It could have been July, October, or even January. I saw short, t-shirt, and sandal ensembles, sundresses and the like but then, directly across the street were several people in fleece jackets, jeans, and boots and all I could think was WHAT? Was the temperature 30 degrees cooler on the right side of the street? Had they just come down a mountain? I just could not get past the wide-range of outfits people in the same one-mile range had decided were appropriate that morning.
Sure, football season has started, Labor Day has come and gone; this is our fourth week of classes, stores have been pushing sweaters and boots since the end of July, Pumpkin Spice Lattes are flowing, and gourds are popping up everywhere, I even came this close to buying a decorative pumpkin last week (I blame the fact that it was shiny and at TJ Maxx) but it's 80 degrees!
I’m a sappy fall lover-I look forward to warm comfy sweaters, jackets, and boots, apple cider and pumpkin everything, gorgeous foliage, and would gladly accept a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils (bonus points for catching that movie reference) but, pleaseWAIT! It’s not time yet. Not only is it 80 degrees! But, fall also means writing papers, stressing out and studying for finals – so I say we hold off as long as we can. [Except for studying-we can’t hold off on that.] Scientifically, fall does not begin until the Autumnal Equinox on September 22 at 4:44 p.m. – so let’s wait until then to come to terms with summer being over. I (one of those crazy obsessed, annoying Pumpkin Spice Latte drinkers) will even wait until the 22nd to have my first PSL of the season.
Also, as one of the Blog’s Lifestyle and Food Editors, I pledge not to publish a recipe containing pumpkin until its officially fall-but then all bets are off! I’m looking forward to sharing lots of delicious fall recipes (and feel free to pass on any recipe requests).
