CONSTITUTION OF THE WOMEN’S LAW CAUCUS
OF WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LAW
Article I: Name
The name of this organization shall be Women’s Law Caucus of West Virginia University College of Law.
Article II: Purpose and Mission
The purpose of this organization shall be the promotion of an understanding of issues encountered by women in the community and in the law school environment. This organization will work to encourage women to excel in their law school and legal careers. The continuing mission of the Women’s Law Caucus is to heighten the role of women in the legal profession and bring about a greater awareness of social, economic, legal and political issues facing all people in the State of West Virginia, regardless of gender. The goal of the organization is to include the ideas of all interested law students, faculty and staff to facilitate an understanding of issues that affect the profession and society as a whole.
Article III: Membership
Section 1. Membership into the organization is open to all interested persons who pay membership dues of $10.00. The voting membership of this organization shall be limited to organization members who are WVU students.
Section 2. This organization will not deny membership on the basis of race, sex, age, disability veteran status, religion, sexual orientation, color or national origin.
Article IV: Officers
Section 1. The offices of this organization shall be President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Student Bar Association Representative and Committee Coordinator and shall be elected annually by February 15 of each school year.
Section 2. The duties of the office shall be:
President â?? to provide leadership, serve as a spokesperson and representative of the group and generally to promote the interests of the organization, and to act as a liaison with the faculty advisor.
Vice President â?? to assist the President as needed, to assume the duties and responsibilities of the President in the event she becomes incapable of doing so, and to learn the duties of the President and to act as a liaison with the faculty advisor.
Secretary â?? to assume traditional duties of correspondence and recording secretary and to provide notice of future meetings.
Treasurer â?? to handle the organization’s monetary transactions and records and the submission of the budget to the Student Bar Association.
SBA Rep â?? to act as a liaison between the SBA and WLC and to keep WLCabreast of issues involving the SBA and the law school in general and to keep the SBA abreast of the activities of WLC.
Committee Coordinator â?? to coordinate the activities of various committees, to create committees when necessary and to supervise the activities of the committees.
Section 3. To hold an elected office in the Women’s Law Caucus, a member must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the time of election, must be a student currently enrolled at the College of Law, and may not be on academic or disciplinary probation during their term in office.
Article V: Special WVU Requirements
This organization will adhere to the West Virginia University Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Article VI: Meetings
Section 1. Regular meetings shall be held once a month.
Section 2. Special meetings may be called by the President or the Vice President when necessary.
Section 3. Quorum shall be constituted by 15% members present at a meeting.
Article VII: Committees
Committees will be created on an as needed basis, to organize events sponsored by the organization.
Article VIII: Parliamentary Authority
All meetings and business of the organization shall be conducted in accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order (Revised).
Article IX: Women’s Awards and Benefit Dinner
Each spring the organization will sponsor an annual Women’s Awards and Benefit Dinner. The organization will recognize three (3) outstanding women in the legal community by bestowing upon them plaques. The purpose of this dinner is to promote these women and to raise money for the Women’s Law Caucus Scholarship fund. The scholarship is named the Agnes Westbrook Morrison Memorial Scholarship Fund.
