WVU Law hosting a strategic cannabis conference

MORGANTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA — The West Virginia University College of Law is hosting a conference to discuss the legal medical and industrial use of cannabis in the state.

The Strategic Cannabis Conference will be held on Thursday, March 17, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the College of Law Event Hall, followed by a reception. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

The conference is meant to be a forum for doctors, lawyers, government officials, business entrepreneurs, patients, and advocates who are interested in a “gold standard” cannabis policy for West Virginia.

Cannabis is a plant that has long been used for hemp products, including rope and textiles, medicinal purposes, and as a recreational drug. It is legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia.

Banned in the U.S. since 1957, hemp production was reauthorized for research purposes by the 2014 federal Farm Bill. Currently, West Virginia is one of 27 states that have removed barriers for the production of industrial hemp.

“Exploring research and development avenues for both industrial and medical cannabis is the first step in creating a sustainable industry for the future economic prosperity of West Virginia,” said conference organizer Morgan Leach, a third-year law student at WVU.

Jesse Richardson, a WVU associate professor of law, will open the conference with an overview of cannabis laws. Other speakers throughout the afternoon include Dr. Clark Milton of Wheeling Hospital, WVU psychology professor Steven Kinsey, and Lauren Berlekamp of Vote Hemp.

Topics of discussion will include seed to sale solutions, an overview of medical and industrial cannabis, an analysis of various cannabis policies, and uses of hemp in the polymer industry.

The Strategic Cannabis Conference is sponsored by BioTrackTHC, iHemp, and the West Virginia Hemp Farmer’s Cooperative.
