Application For Federal Aid
To apply for federal aid for the 2008-2009 academic year you will complete the 2008-2009 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Complete the FAFSA even if you have not received a decision letter.
To complete the FAFSA online you must have a Personal Identification Number (PIN) issued by the Department of Education at www.pin.ed.gov Your PIN number is also used to:
- Complete and sign the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note online.
- Allows you to access your loan information on line through Direct Loan Servicing Online
- Complete FAFSA on the web for subsequent years.
Helpful Hints: Read the on-line instructions completely. Have your tax returns and all other needed information available. You will receive a conformation number at the time of submission. If you do not receive a conformation number your application has not been submitted.

Aggregate loan amount for both these loans, including undergraduate loans is $138,500.
Federal Direct Grad/Professional Plus Loans are available to all students whose budget exceeds the maximum amount allowed in the Federal Direct Loan Programs ($20,500). Please note, your credit will be a consideration in the approval process. The interest rate is fixed at 7.9%. There is a separate application for this loan which can be printed out from WVU financial aid. Keep in mind your total financial aid package cannot exceed the financial aid cost of attendance.
WVU Graduate Assistantships may be available to assist students in continuing their education at the graduate level. These positions obligate the student to work between 12 and 20 hours, depending on the assigned duties. For more information, students should contact the department that they wish to be employed.
The Federal Work Study Program is another form of federally funded aid that provides students with paid work experience as part of your financial aid “package”. Employment may not exceed twenty hours per week while classes are in session, or forty hours per week during other periods.

The College of Law Library employs law students to help staff the library during hours of operation. Preference is given to second and third year students.
Alternative Loans are available to all students whose financial Cost of Attendance Budget exceeds the maximum amount allowed in the Federal Direct Loan Programs ($20,500). Please note, your credit will be a consideration in the approval process and you cannot receive more than your financial aid cost of attendance.
