Cannabis is a plant that has long been used for hemp products, including rope and textiles, medicinal purposes, and as a recreational drug. It is legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia.
Banned in the U.S. since 1957, hemp production for research purposes was reauthorized by the 2014 federal Farm Bill. (Marijuana was banned by the 1937 "Marihuana Tax Act.") Currently, West Virginia is one of 27 states that have removed barriers for the production of industrial hemp.
Exploring research and development avenues for both industrial and medical cannabis is the first step in creating a sustainable industry for the future economic prosperity of West Virginia.
