Natalie Wright Recounts Her Trip to China

Natalie Wright, a third-year law student at the College of Law spent the summer in China through the efforts of WVU’s Office of International Programs and professor Hanna Lin, who is introducing Mandarin to public schools across the Mountain State through the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. Natalie shares her experiences in an article posted online in WVU Today.

Gabriele Wohl Studies Space Law

Gabriele Wohl, 3L, and Editor in-Chief of the West Virginia Law Review was interviewed in an article in the Canadian Business Online, dated July 30, 2008. In the article titled the Final Frontier she discusses her interest in the field of “Space Law.”

Reshard J. Alexander Appointed as a 2008-09 Liaison
for the ABA’s Environment, Energy, and Resource Section

Reshard J. Alexander, a rising second year at the West Virginia University College of Law has been appointed as a student liaison for the ABA’s Environment, Energy, and Resource Section for the 2008-2009 academic year. He is currently engaged in a fellowship position for the Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association (see article).

As a Liaison, he will serve in dual capacities; first, as a voice of the Law Student Division to the ABA entity, and second, as a voice of the ABA entity to the Law Student Division. Similarly, the Law Student Division and the ABA entity will require him to submit reports that summarize what you have done to promote the Division and the ABA entity. more...

2008 Marlyn E. Lugar Trial Association Winners

The Marlyn E. Lugar Trial Association would like to recognize Tyler Slavey and
John Tsikerdanos as the 2008 M.E. Lugar Trial Association Invitational
winners.

Marlyn E. Lugar Trial Association seeks to expose law students to current legal
issues affecting the profession through issue relevant trial competitions.
Current developments in elder mistreatment have attracted attention from
current practitioners and policy makers across the country. This years case
involved prosecution for the crimes of elder abuse and neglect. The victim,
was 60 years old with Parkinson’s disease, and was found unconscious in his
motorized wheelchair in the backyard of his home. He suffered heatstroke and
severe sunburn from overexposure, and had suspicious bruises on his arms and
legs. The defendant was alleged to have been the victim’s caretaker and was
charged with two counts of elder abuse and neglect. more...

West Virginia University College of Law Weekend of Honors

The West Virginia College of Law held its 2008 Awards and recognition reception where students and faculty were recognized for individual achievements, and Class of 2007 inductees in to the Order of the Coif, Order of Barristers, and Patrick Duffy Koontz Award recipients were announced. more...

PIA Loan Repayment Assistance Awards

Three students have been given Loan Repayment Assistance awards by the WV Fund for Law in the Public Interest for 2009. The Fund recently named graduating students Matthew Brummond, Steven Conifer and Angela Smith as recipients of the awards. Each will work for a public interest organization in West Virginia.

The awards are designed to encourage graduates with educational debt burdens to take public interest employment at salaries that might otherwise make it difficult or even impossible for them to meet their educational debt obligations. more...

Reshard J. Alexander, Awarded
2008 ABA Environmental Law Fellowship

First year law student Reshard J. Alexander, was awarded a fellowship by the Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA). The NCBA with a funding match from the American Bar Association’s Section of Environment, Energy and Resources and the NCBA Foundation Endowment offers up to two environmental law fellowship positions for this summer for students taking positions in public or nonprofit sector organizations. The fellowships are designed to encourage disadvantaged or traditionally underrepresented law students to study and pursue careers in environmental law. more...

WVU College of Law Students Reach Semi-finals at
NBLSA 2007-2008 International Negotiation Competition

Second -year law students Anoa Changa and Natalie Wright competed in the National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA) 2007-2008 International Negotiation Competition at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI. They advanced to the semi-finals arguing The competition focused on an international problem involving the development of a vaccination to end tuberculosis and child mortality. Competitors were assigned a role as representatives from one of four fictional countries, each team was comprised of either an ngo/corporation and a govt. leader. more...

David Stackpole wins George C. Baker Cup

In what WV Supreme Court Justice Robin J. Davis remarked as one of the closest competitions she had judged in her 11 visits to the WVU College of Law Moot Court competition in Morgantown, David Stackpole was selected as the 2008 George C. Baker Cup Champion. Stackpole, a second year student and member of the Moot Court National team argued on behalf of the United States in the problem of Costello v. United States before the WV Supreme Court. more...

Deva Solomon Wins National Security Writing Competition

Journal of the National Security Forum

Deva Solomon In response to a call for papers by the Journal of the National Security Forum at William Mitchell College of Law, third year WVU College of Law student Deva Solomon, submitted an article that was selected as the Student Note Competition winner. The article titled Can Government Indefinitely Detain Individuals It Accuses of Being Enemy Combatants? will be published in Volume 34 of the Journal of the National Security Forum this June. more...

2008 Mardi Gras Invitational Sports Law Competition
WVU College of Law Team Finishes 3rd

Each year, Tulane University School of law Moot Court, in conjunction with the Tulane Sports Lawyers’ Journal, hosts the Mardi Gras Sports Law Competition, an appellate competition focusing on sports-law related topics. Joshua Mullins and Ben Gill, coached by Professor andré douglas pond cummings, advanced into the final round and finished third out of thirty-six teams.
